In 2012, the Federal Aviation Association (FAA) awarded Spokane International Airport a VALE grant to make considerable updates to its heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Specifically, the Airport used the funds to purchase and install 14 pre-conditioned air units (PCA) and 17 ground power converter units, which work together to cool and warm the Airport’s 14 passenger jet bridges, along with aircraft parked at the corresponding gate.

The results of this VALE grant funded project have improved the air quality here at the Airport and locally for our community. Additionally, this sustainability project has reduced maintenance and operating costs, allowing the Airport to invest the cost savings into improving customer experience and operations.

Historically, aircraft relied on jet fuel to heat and cool the cabin, and PCA units used diesel fuel to condition the air. The new units, acquired through the VALE grant, are powered by electricity. The Airport purchases electricity locally from Avista Utilities, which generates most of their electricity from renewable or lower-carbon intensive sources.

Using FAA modeling programs, it’s estimated that over their useful life, these upgraded units will result in a reduction of 370 tons of nitrous oxides, volatile organic compounds, carbon monoxide, and sulfur oxides emissions.
